Should the Department of Defense be exempt from federal spending reductions?
No, I believe every dime spent by the federal government needs to be justified. I worked closely with the Defense Department's budget and know there is room for improvement in the Pentagon's financial management systems. I believe in a strong national defense, but know there is waste in the DoD budget, just as there is in the non-defense discretionary accounts. Our nation can't afford that waste. We are running a deficit of over a trillion dollars and running up debt that severely threatens the opportunity for our children's success.

What do candidates for Congress think about Paul Ryan's "Path to Prosperity" budget?
I believe the Ryan budget is a bold step in the right direction towards placing our country back on a sound financial footing. I am looking forward to the President's budget, which will be released in early February, and hope that President Obama takes his cue from Chairman Ryan and offers bold and thoughtful proposals to curb out of control federal spending.
